According to Hanna Starostenko, imperial Russia brazenly appropriated the name of the centre of the avant-garde, our cultural figures and their creative heritage. But one has to look at the creative biographies of the brightest representatives of the avant-garde to understand that it was Ukraine that made a phenomenal contribution to world culture. And our task is to complete the decolonisation of the Ukrainian avant-garde.
The exposition of the exhibition is structured to show the evolution of Ukrainian avant-garde art in its several periods. Oleksandr Dubovyk and Viktor Ryzhykh are the representatives of the 2nd wave (60s); Anatoly Kryvolap, Marko Geyko, Mykola Kryvenko, Tiberiy Silvashi, Oleksandr Babak, Oleksandr Dyachenko, Vasyl Bazhai, Oleksandr Sukholit, Viktor Sydorenko, Oleg Tistol, Oleksandr Roitburd, Mykola Matsenko, Ihor Stupachenko, Maksym Mamsikov — representatives of the 3rd wave (80– 90s). The 4th wave (the beginning of the 21st century) will be represented by the works of Roman Minin and Anna Mironova, artists from the Forbes rating "The best young artists of Ukraine".
All the works presented at the exhibition were provided by famous collectors and artists with the support of the Avant-Garde Museum NGO
Project curator: Yurii Komelkov, Head of the Avant-Garde Museum NGO
Project experts: Eduard Dymshyts - art critic, academician of the European Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, honorary academician of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, partner in the creation of the museum. Dmytro Horbachov - art historian, chief scientific advisor of the museum.

"Kyiv is regaining the glory of the world centre of the avant-garde. We were a hundred years ago, but Russia stole our right to be called the centre of the world avant-garde. I am sure that everyone in the world knows the names of Kazimir Malevich, Oleksandra Ekster, Oleksandr Arkhipenko, but few people know that their work is connected with Ukraine and Kyiv. And today we have to restore historical justice. As we fight for our right to live in a free, independent Ukraine, we are also working every day to decolonise our culture. I am extremely grateful to the Ukrainian collectors and artists who donate their works of the Ukrainian avant-garde to create a new collection at the Museum of the History of Kyiv," said Hanna Starostenko, Deputy Mayor of Kyiv.
Director General of the Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv Diana Popova: "The avant-garde became the most powerful "cultural revolution" in the history of world art, which influenced the development of all spheres of human life: fine art, cinema, music, architecture, design, and literature. In addition to the most famous avant-garde artist Kazimir Malevich, we should pay attention to Oleksandr Arkhypenko, the founder of Cubism in sculpture, a pioneer of sculptural painting, whose phenomenon is based on the impression of his native land: the magic of Trypillian culture, the archaic Polovtsian statues, mosaics of St Sophia of Kyiv, reliefs of St Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral, and the colours of peasant ceramics."
Curator Yurii Komelkov: "The avant-garde was the greatest world revolution that influenced all areas of art: cinema, theatre, literature, fine arts, architecture, and everyday life. The avant-garde influenced the development of household appliances. And Ukraine is involved in this. Ukraine has the right to call itself the homeland of the avant-garde, because the most influential avant-garde artists in the world are primarily Ukrainians, and half of them are from Kyiv."
