About the project

On 12 July 2023, at 6 pm, the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine opened the third part of the Concentration of the Will project as part of the 15th platform of cultural initiatives "Newest Directions".
The large-scale project Concentration of the Will has been exhibited in three venues of the organizing institutions: the first stage was held in May at the Modern Art Research Institute, the second, in June, at the M17 Contemporary Art Center, and the final part of the exhibition project opens in July at the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine. Each of the three locations has its own list of participants and exhibition of artworks.
The project aims to showcase contemporary art that reveals the Ukrainian vision of the will, the mental forces that help in the liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people against russia.

    In order to find the most suitable artworks for the project concept, international open call was launched, and authors of the iconic works, that were created during the phase of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, were invited. As a result, more than 100 artists took part in the Concentration of the Will project.
    The artists represented at the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine:Matviy Vaisberg, Yuriy Vakulenko, Oleg Veklenko, Solomiia Gorobiuk, Magdalena Gryska, Serhii Zapadnia, Oleksii Ivaniuk, Iryna Kalenyk, Viktoriia Kartashova, Dmytro Kozatskyi, Anatoly Kryvolap, Mariya Levytska, Volodymyr Lesnyak, Anton Logov, Pavlo Makov, Lyubomyr Medvid, Serhiy Mykhalchuk, Roman Minin, Olga Petrova, Ed Potapenkov, Oleksii Revika, Olesya Trofimenko, Radoslav Charkovsky, and Daniil Shumikhin.
    An important part of the programme of events in the NAA of Ukraine is a series of documentary short films "Culture vs War" by the "Watch Ukrainian!" association, which tells the story of famous Ukrainian artists who rose up to defend Ukraine. The slogan of the project is "To be free to create". This statement embodies the central idea of artistic reflections united in the Concentration of the Will.

In the first hours, the exhibition was attended by over a hundred people. Among them were Rostyslav Karandieiev, First Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, Dmytro Kozatskyi, Ukrainian photographer and fighter of the Azov Battalion of the National Guard of Ukraine, and film and music producer Andriy Rizol.
The Vice-Presidents of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine Oles Sanin and Yuriy Vakulenko, curators of the exhibition Andriy Sydorenko and Ira Iatsyk, as well as special guests, delivered welcoming speeches, emphasising the importance of staging a large-scale exhibition project such as the Concentration of the Will during the time of war.
The Concentration of the Will exhibition project was held in three consecutive stages: the first stage took place in May at the Modern Art Research Institute of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, the second in June at the M17 Contemporary Art Center, and the final part of the exhibition project opened this week at the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine. The architectural design solution for the exhibition space at the NAA of Ukraine was designed by the architect Oleksandr Burlaka exclusively for the opening of the project.

Art Support Fund

Art Support Fund is an independent, non-profit, charitable and public-benefit foundation initiated by a group of international patrons, contributing to arts and culture and following the aim to help and support the preservation of the cultural heritage of Ukraine. The Fund was established to ensure the sustainable functioning of the Ukrainian cultural sector, including professionals, assets and infrastructure.

The Natalia Cola Foundation

The Natalia Cola Foundation was founded by Ukrainian philanthropist and art patron Natalia Cola in 2019. The foundation's mission is to support discourse, education and access to the arts, with a focus on art created in Ukraine. The Natalia Cola Foundation initiated and organised a charity auction at the Royal Academy to support the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine in January 2023.

The Aleksandr Savchuk Foundation

The Aleksandr Savchuk Foundation is a charitable organisation in the fields of culture, healthcare and ecology. The president of the foundation is philanthropist Taisiya Savchuk-Polishchuk. Taisiya Savchuk-Polishchuk also participated in a charity auction to support the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine at the Royal Academy, London.
